How to See the World When You’re Scared of Flying

Scared of Flying

Last Updated on: Jun 5, 2024

Many people dream of travelling the world and experiencing new cultures, sights, foods and adventures. However, for those with a fear of flying, the thought of getting on an airplane can cause extreme stress and anxiety. The good news is that with a bit of planning, you can still satisfy your wanderlust without having to set foot on an aircraft. There are several alternative forms of transport that make seeing the world possible even if you’re scared of flying.

Cross the Channel by Ferry

One option is to take a ferry to cross bodies of water instead of flying over them. For example, you can take a ferry across the English Channel from Dover to Calais. From the port city of Calais in northern France, you have easy access by train or car to fabulous European destinations like Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam and Berlin.

Train travel in Europe

Taking the train in Europe is relatively comfortable and affordable, allowing you to immerse yourself in local culture as you watch the countryside roll by your window. Europe’s extensive train system connects major cities so you can create your own customised itinerary. Or if you prefer the freedom of having your own vehicle, renting a car is also quite easy. Driving along scenic routes allows you to stop whenever and wherever you please to fully experience each new place.

See the World by Cruise Ship

Another idea is to travel by cruise ship to exotic global ports while only needing to unpack once. Today’s cruise ships are more like floating resorts, offering activities, entertainment, restaurants and comfortable staterooms. They sail to tropical Caribbean islands, the Mediterranean coast, Alaska, Hawaii, Australia and New Zealand. While the ship is at port for a day or two, you can disembark to explore each location before returning at night. It’s an effortless way to see multiple destinations without constantly repacking.

Journey Overland

If you have more time, going on an overland journey is an amazing way to have a real adventure. One epic possibility is to follow the famous Hippie Trail which starts in Europe and goes through Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, and ends in Nepal or India. Though parts of the original Hippie Trail are too dangerous now due to political unrest, a modified route uses public transport to link the cultural highlights and natural beauty of countries like Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

Journey overland

Travelling slowly overland allows genuine interactions with local people to learn about their fascinating history and culture. An overland odyssey through little-known ‘Stans lets you discover places well off the usual tourist routes. As long as you don’t mind long bus or train rides, it’s one of the world’s greatest journeys.

Hopefully, these ideas have shown that a fear of flying doesn’t have to keep you grounded. With a bit of planning, there are plenty of safe, comfortable, and scenic modes of transportation to whisk you away on your next dream vacation. You better get booking!
