14 Romantic places to spend Valentine’s Day

Love is a feeling that transcends all. Love makes us do wonders. But where do we find it? Is it in the eyes of our beloved? Or is it just holding the hands of our dear one that makes you feel loved? Or is it in the green mountains or the blue seas or the yellow sands. We are celebrating Valentine’s Day today which is the day of love (though St. Valentine did not only spoke of romantic love, it is only after Chaucer’s poetry in the 14th Century that Valentine’s Day got the romantic connotation). Also we celebrated Saraswati Puja which is considered the Valentine’s Day for Bengalis, and being a true blue Bong, how can we escape the throngs of love this month. This is a month of love. So here we present a list of our places where we felt loved, the places which brought out the best in us.

Before I start, let me tell you that our first Valentine’s Day was celebrated way back in 2006 at Rabindra Sarobar Lake in Kolkata!

#1. Darjeeling, the eternal romantic place

This does not come as a surprise as our love for Darjeeling is well known. So Darjeeling tops our list. The roads of Darjeeling, the Mall and the tea gardens are all there with their romantic splendor. The Darjeeling Himalayan railway or in layman’s terms the toy train ride along the hilly roads can turn anyone romantic.

#2. Nubra Valley, Leh

India’s coldest desert – the name itself shows the place is different. Yes, at a height of about 10,000 ft ASL, the vast stretches of sand dunes at Nubra valley fills your heart with joy. Also the  difficulty (you have to pass through the world’s highest pass, the Khardung La at 18379 ft and the road conditions are not very encouraging) of reaching this place makes this place even more romantic. And at the night, just gaze up to see the clear night sky dotted with numerous stars.

#3. Pangong lake, Leh

Leh is a place that has always charmed its visitors for its landscape and variety. After the cold dunes, you will simply get mesmerized by the clear azure waters of the Pangong Lake. If possible, stay a night at the tents beside the lake and you will wish that the moment never ceases.

#4. Goa

I do not have to say anything to Goa. It happens to be one of the most beautiful and romantic places. The sea beaches of Goa are full of life. And if you want solitude, head off towards the secluded beaches like Butterfly beach or Kakolem beach among the few.

#5. Dudhsagar falls

This comes to our list simply because of the sheer magnificence of the falls.  A walk through the jungles and then suddenly you are in front of a huge waterfall with water falling down with all might in a small pool below, what makes it even more beautiful is the surroundings and the Konkan Railway track beside the water fall. Just hold hands and get into the pool right below the fall to have an experience of lifetime.

#6. Cherrapunji

If there be a dreamland, it has to be Cherrapunji. Visit during the monsoons and you will be literally in the abode of clouds. You will also see the Seven Sister Falls at its best. At Cherrapunji you can see nature’s marvel at its best. With the company of your loved one, enjoy the drizzle with hot tea and pakoras, or simply go for a drive through the misty roads and experience Cherrapunji at its best.

Ooty is lover’s paradise. From the misty hills to the towering trees, Ooty spreads love. And the train ride from Ooty to Connoor is simply magical. The freshness of Ooty is as beautiful as the flush of first love.

For the adventurous couple, you can spend your best times at Rishikesh. The river rafting and bungee jumping is there to quench your thirst for adrenaline rush; the Yoga centre for your spiritual thirst. After a crazy stint at river rafting with your partner, both of you will feel closer than ever.

#9.Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh

Tawang, tucked at one of the farthest corners of eastern India is another of our favourite. The place has a monastery (Tawang Monastery), waterfall (Jung Waterfall) and numerous lakes scattered throughout its landscape. The most famous lake is the Madhuri Lake. Tawang is serene and and is one of the best places to lose yourself with your partner.

Manali is the place for love. Manali is a unique place – perfect place for backpackers, adventurers and honeymooners alike. Manali is a haven for travellers all year round. The view of the lofty mountains and a playful day spent at the Rohtang Pass, it can’t get any more romantic.

#11. Neil island, Andaman

The pristine blue waters of the Neil Islands are the perfect place to spend your time with your sweet heart. About 2 hours ferry ride from Port Blair, Neil Island is secluded than its more famous cousin Havelock Island, and that’s what we liked about the place. The beaches are perfect with blue waters and golden sands. Just hire a bicycle or scooty and you can ride through the length and breadth of the island. Neil gives you ample time and place to be alone with your partner – imagine just the two of you in a vast stretch of beach without anyone in sight!

#12. Gorkhey:

How about spending time some in a sleepy hamlet in the midst of a forest? That is Gorkhey for you – a dreamy village with the river Gorkhey Khola running between. Gorkhey, a lesser known place of Sikkim is a perfect place to spend a romantic day with the special person in your life.

#13. Jayanti, Dooars

Jayanti is a place that is very close to our heart. Jayanti is an offbeat destination within the Buxa Tiger Reserve very near to Alipurduar. The river Jayanti meanders through the charming and tranquil place. With no mobile network, Jayanti is the best place to enjoy some quality time with the important person in your life.

#14. Panchmarhi

Panchmarhi is a jewel in the Satpuras and very rightly called the Queen of Satpuras. A small and clean town surrounded by the hills makes this one of the romantic places that we have visited. What makes it more special is that the Madhya Pradesh tourism hotels are all located in very picturesque locations.
