A Spa session is always relaxing, and it becomes even more exciting when you can view the soft waves breaking on a secluded beautiful beach. The Ayurvedic Spa at the Chariot Beach Resort offers this wonderful experience. I had the opportunity to experience the wellness at the Ayurvedic Spa at the Chariot Beach Resort in Mahabalipuram when I got invited to the Bloggers’ Retreat there. Read about my experience at the resort here.

Of late, the lady at my Salon told me that SPA is actually an acronym for the Latin phrase “salus per aquae” or “sanus per aquae” meaning “health through water.” Being and overtly inquisitive soul, I then tried to delve into the history of spa and its origin. So please bear with my history lesson for a moment!

It is believed that SPA originated during the Roman era when people believed in the healing power of water. When the troopers after war fatigue wanted to rejuvenate and treat their sore wounds, they trusted water to be the elixir of all their problems. Natural and hot springs were considered to be the best cure for the wounds and the sore muscles. Thus baths were built around natural springs, hot water springs and wells. These baths were known as “aquae” and the treatment undergone in these aquae came to be known as “Sanus per Aquae” or SPA. “SPA” is literally thus treatment through water.

There is another school of thought that believes the word “spa” has originated from the Belgian town of Spa which was well known during the Roman times for the baths and hot springs. The town was so known for its bath that the word spa became synonymous with any place where one can get pampered and relaxed! Whatever be the history of SPA, there is nothing like getting pampered at a spa.

My experience at the Ayurvedic Spa:

This was one of the best Spa massages that I had received. The ambience was soothing and the reception was warm. The Spa cottage was just close to the sea beach and I could have a clear view of the sea as I received the relaxing massage from the masseur. She was an experienced and a sweet girl from Mizoram. I immediately stroked a conversation with her. She was here in Chennai for the last two years and was missing her home a lot. We both had a lot of discussion about Kolkata, Chennai and Mizoram in general before I almost dozed off while she gave me a relaxing spa therapy.
